Shaw About and History
What started as a small company that dyed tufted scatter rugs in 1964, grew to become one of the biggest manufacturer's of carpet today. They were known as Star Dye Company before changing the name to Shaw once the business grew into the flooring giant it is known today as. The philosophy that has gotten Shaw where they are today has not deviated through the years since it still directs them to meeting customers desires and making sure to meet those needs.
Shaw has furthered their growth and expansion by adding several services bases on their customers such as by:
- 1972- Shaw acquired their first yarn plant
- 1973- The first continuous dye plant
- Created their own trucking supplementary for national shipments
- 1982- they greatly broadened the company’s direct sales to retailers
- Launched regional distribution centers in the United States
- Shaw also started to modernize their plants and equipment in the 1980’s
- Decreasing the consumption of fuel, water and electricity during the manufacturing process while cultivating innovative recycling solutions
- 1992- Shaw gained Amoco’s polypropylene fiber production facilities
- 1993- opened their rug division with their hard surfaces division opening in 1998 with the launch of Shaw Ceramics while later creating Shaw laminates and Shaw hardwoods.
Shaw strives to become a low-cost supplier which ultimately lead to their choice to acquire Cabin Crafts and Sutton. One choice that was the most significant for Shaw as a company was their decision to merge with Queen Carpets.
Shaw ended their tenure as a public company in 2011 with the sale to Berkshire Hathaway Inc, which is known for purchasing and holding businesses that have a commanding market share with strong management teams and have been considered underestimated in the stock market.
Today, Shaw has over 25,000 employees that work for them while they have become a full-service billion dollar flooring company. With the guidance of their CEO and President along with the daily efforts of their employees that demonstrate the dedication and persistence of the company to stay highly competitive and on top in this continually changing industry.
